Homily 480 | 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time | Year B
How ’bout those Chiefs? It’s pretty exciting here in Kansas City. Even if you’re not a football fan, you likely know that today is Super Bowl Sunday. In today’s homily I consider all the fun things we do to “support” our favorite sports teams. There are many ways in which the world of sports can teach us a thing or two about the spiritual life.
The Super Bowl is big. But what if we took our spiritual life and the celebration of Mass as seriously as we did “the big game?” For Christians, every Sunday is super. The Mass is not entertainment, but we also get more out of it than just yelling pointlessly at our TV. When we participate in Mass, we receive God. Indeed, to paraphrase Jesus, “There’s something greater than the Super Bowl here!”
