The Day We’ve Been Marching For

by Shawn P. Tunink

Since my first March for Life over 20 years ago I always prayed that I would see this day. The darkness of January 22nd is now replaced with the light of June 24th, the feast of St. John the Baptist and, this year, the Sacred Heart of Jesus. However, setting morality aside, one of the things that has always been most striking to me about the March for Life is the destination of the March.

People marching in the streets to advocate for their views is what democracy looks like. The founders would be proud. Yet they would be bewildered to see the March go right past the Capitol building and instead stop at the Supreme Court. The Capitol is the People’s House where laws are made and legislators are accountable to the people. The balance of power among our three branches of federal government is at the essence of our democracy. Today the Supreme Court said, “This power belongs to the Legislative Branch.”

The fact that someone with power would say that someone else should have it is almost a miracle today. I rejoice for the millions of lives that will be saved because of this day. But I also rejoice that the greatest system of government the world has known just got healthier.
